Abstract/Summary

'Geophysical survey and trial excavation has been undertaken by the Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group on the site of the Romano-British settlement near Common Mead Lane, Gillingham (around ST800263). Previous work on the site by the group since 1976 has revealed a settlement covering an area of at least 4 hectares, dating from the 1st to 4th century AD Proposed housing development to the north of the present residential estate will threaten areas where further archaeological deposits are suspected to exist. A programme of test-pit excavation commenced in the Autumn of 1983 and will continue into 1984. Preliminary results from the area around ST 80022638 have revealed small quantities of Romano-British pottery thought to derive from settlement areas to the west. No features have been discovered.'
