Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology, including a site visit on 6th Feb 1997, in advance of scheduled monument consent for the development of industrial units at Cooper's Wholesale, The Grove Trading Estate, Dorchester. A large part of the study area lay within the area of the Scheduled Monument of Poundbury Camp. It is, therefore, within an area of previously demonstrated high archaeological potential with a chronological range from the Neolithic to the post-Roman periods. However, one third of the area in question has been substantially reduced in level by recent building work; much of the remainder has been altered to a lesser extent. Approximately one eighth of the area remains untouched.
