EDO3913 - Poundbury Phase II; Geophysical Survey

A magnetometer survey was carried out by Geophysical Surveys of Bradford in November 1996 to identify areas of archaeological potential. This was undertaken as part of an archaeological evaluation by Wessex Archaeology of land designated as Poundbury Phase II, in advance of a proposed light industrial development. The whole of the proposed development area was scanned by magnetometer survey to identify areas for more detailed survey. Four detailed survey areas were defined: Area A was chosen to investigate an H-shaped cropmark; Area B was designed to investigate the possible extension of a cropmark enclosure into the development area; Area C was defined to investigate anomalies noted in the initial scanning; Area D was to investigate an area of increased response noted in the initial scanning. The results of the detailed survey did not identify any clear archaeological features. A few ephemeral trends were tentatively highlighted as archaeology, but may have natural or agricultural origins. No evidence of archaeological features were recorded during the trenching phase of the evaluation, suggesting that the anomalies recorded by the geophysical surveys may have been geological in origin.
