EDO3922 - Poundbury Phase II, Dorchester; evaluation 1996

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land designated as Poundbury Phase II, in advance of a proposed light industrial development. Initially geophysical and fieldwalking surveys were carried out to identify areas of archaeological potential. Neither survey produced convincing evidence for features or areas of archaeological importance. Seven trial trenches were excavated to investigate cropmarks, geophysical anomalies or slight surface concentrations of flint. No evidence of archaeological features were recorded in any of the trenches. This is noteworthy considering the abundant features noted by previous work in the area. It is suggested that subsequent ploughing may have destroyed any archaeological features and that anomalies recorded by recent geophysical surveys may have been geological in origin.
