Description
The channel of the Roman aqueduct was sectioned by the north and south foundation trenches during December 1956, at the west end of 22 Poundbury Crescent [1]. The grid refence is given as SY 67969064 and in another source as 67979065 [2]. However, these locations lie close to 43 Poundbury Crescent, some 65m NE of 22 Poundbury Crescent.
R. A. H. Farrar was allowed to deepen the foundation trenches to examine cross sections on behalf of the RCHM. The aqueduct had evidently turned south in the head of the re-entrant before swinging eastwards to pass to the north of the waterworks [2].
At first it seems more likely that the grid references are wrong rather than number 22 Poundbury Crescent being mistaken for number 43. However, the fact that two similar but not identical grid references are given would suggest otherwise. It is possible that the houses were re-numbered following construction. Mapped according to Grid ref. at 43 Poundbury Crescent.
