Description
Bournemouth University undertook an evaluation of a site at the western end of the garden of The Rectory, South Street, Bridport, on land proposed for housing development, in 1996. This followed an earlier desk-based assessment. Four Trenches (I-IV) were excavated: two 5x1m trenches, one 4x1m trench and one 2x1m trench.
Trench II was 5x1m across and aligned roughly N-S. At the southern end of the trench were the remains of a mortared limestone wall running roughly E-W. A single course of limestone rubble bonded with earthy mortar (incorporating fragments of pottery and clay pipe) survived. This wall may be part of an outhouse marked on the 1774 map of Bridport in Hutchins (*). To the north of the wall was a pit with a layer of stone and brick rubble and post-medieval finds at the base. This may have been a soakaway. One other feature, associated with modern gardening activity was also found. (1)
