Description

Bournemouth University undertook an evaluation of a site at the western end of the garden of The Rectory, South Street, Bridport, on land proposed for housing development, in 1996. This followed an earlier desk-based assessment. Four Trenches (I-IV) were excavated: two 5x1m trenches, one 4x1m trench and one 1x1m trench. The vegetation and topsoil was stripped by machine and then excavation proceeded by hand. Beneath the topsoil was a layer of alluvial clay sub-soil over 0.6m thick. The remains of a post-medieval limestone wall was found in one trench. This is probably part of an outhouse marked on Hutchins 1774 map (*). A number of post-medieval pits or soakaways were also found. A small scattering of medieval pottery was recovered from residual contexts.
