Description

AC archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of a plot of land adjacent to South Mill Lane, New Zealand, Bridport in advance of a proposed car park extension during September 2003. Four machine-dug trenches totalling 22.5 m in length were excavated. (1) (2) Trench 1 was positioned across the postulated line of the Saxon defences. It was 5m by 1.5m across, aligned WNW-ESE. The trench revealed a 0.3m thick layer of topsoil above a silty clay natural subsoil. The only feature exposed was part of a modern brick-lined sewer running N-S. No trace of the postulated Saxon defences was found. (2)
