Description
A desk-based assessment, including a site visit, carried out by Place Archaeological Consultants on behalf of Philip Proctor Associates in connection with a planning application for residential development in the gardens of Old Brow.
The proposed development site contains the remains of a medieval farmstead and is adjacent to a twelfth-century castle. Furthermore, the site is within the area postulated for the extent of the Saxon burh. A small number of finds and features observed in the vicinity suggest the possibility of prehistoric activity in the general area.
The author concludes that the site is in an area of high archaeological potential and that there is good reason to believe that archaeological remains may be present within the site.
