Abstract/Summary

This report presents the findings arising from an archaeological desk-based assessment (including site visit) of a potential devlopment site at Old Brow, Bimport, Shaftesbury, Dorset. The assessment was undertaken for Philip Proctor Associates. A range of sources were consulted for the assessment, including the County Sites and Monuments Record as well as documentary and cartographic material. The assessment has shown that the Site contains the remains of a medieval farmstead (protected as a scheduled ancient monument) and is adjacent to a 12th century castle (part of the same scheduled monument). The site is within the likely area of the Saxon burh of Shaftesbury, part of which is also protected as a scheduled monument. Limited later prehistoric remains and the topographical location of the Site suggest some potential for activity/settlement during this period. It is concluded that the Site is within an area of high archaeological potential and that there is good reason to believe that archaeological remains may be present within the Site. It is recommended that prior to any planning application being made the development proposal is discussed with English Heritage and the local planning authority to agree an appropriate course of action, including any necessary mitigation.
