Description

An archaeological evaluation undertaken by AC archaeology for the Shaftesbury & District Historical Society in advance of submission of a planning application for an extension to the Shaftesbury Museum. Two trial pits were excavated by machine, and a third dug by hand. Deep nineteenth- and twentieth-century soil deposits were encountered in Trial Pits 1 and 2, possibly resulting from landscaping. A single, undated feature was recorded in Trial Pit 1. Trial Pit 3 revealed a large, probably medieval, pit and a wall, plus two gullies, one of which the excavators thought likely to be of medieval origin. Some medieval and later pottery was recovered from Trial Pit 3.
