Title | An Archaeological Evaluation at Shaftesbury Museum, Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, Dorset |
Author/Originator | Whelan, J and Firth, E |
Date/Year | 2008 |

Abstract/Summary
AC archaeological undertook an archaeological evaluation in advance of the submission of a planning application for a proposed extension to Shaftesbury Museum (since renamed the Gold Hill Museum, Shaftesbury). Three trial pits were dug. Significantly deep nineteenth and twentieth-century soil deposits were observed in two of the pits, and one undated feature, suggesting relatively modern landscaping of most of the site. The third test pit revealed a large pit, probably medieval, and two gullies, one of which was thought likely to be of medieval origin. The authors note that a moderate amount of medieval and later pottery was recovered.
