Description
AC archaeology carried out a watching brief of minor works at the cemetery of St Mary’s Old Church in Compton Abbas. These were works associated with the survey being undertaken on the graveyard, and comprised of the removal of vegetation, and minor intrusive groundworks.
Ledger 11 (11) required the removal of a small stump growing alongside its eastern edge. This stump did not have extensive roots, and extended no further than 40mm below the base of the ledger.
Tomb 1 (T1) was dismantled during the survey, and the area below cleaned and photographed. The tomb was resting on a fragmented plinth which had subsided some 200mm below the topsoil. This area was cleaned and photographed. A small amount of tile and pottery finds were recovered from the topsoil surrounding the plinth during dismantling, and a fragment of glass was recovered from directly below the plinth.
Tomb 2 (T2) was also dismantled by conservators, though no finds were recovered. The area was cleaned and photographed.
