SDO12370 - St Mary's Old Church, Compton Abbas, Dorset; Survey of monuments and monitoring of associated works

In May/June 2010 AC archaeology Ltd undertook a survey of the monuments in, and watching brief of minor works at, the cemetery of St Mary’s Old Church, Compton Abbas on behalf of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. A total of 31 fragments of headstones, 22 in situ headstones, four ledgers and three tombs was recorded and the result is a photographic archive of the fragments and monuments, record of their inscriptions and description of any decorative motifs. The limited intrusive works yielded little by way of archaeological observations and no work extended further than 220 mm into the topsoil. A very limited number of finds was recovered.
