Description
Terence O’Rourke Ltd was commissioned carry out an archaeological assessment on land at Worgret Road in Wareham, in advance of a potential development. A number of sources were consulted in order to gain the information for this report. The Dorset Historic Environment Record (HER) was consulted in order to find what features were known to have survived in the study area. A map showing the location of the sites and findspots, a gazetteer describing particular sites and a series of site photographs were used describes and puts the site into its immediate surroundings. No nationally important monuments were identified within the study area, though the western circuit of the town walls lies within 1km, to the east.
Although the archaeological resource of the area is partially known, it has not been fully determined across the study site. Therefore it retains archaeological potential. The site has been deemed to be in an area of medium archaeological potential. This is due to the findings along the Wareham by-pass and on Bestwall peninsula. The assessment concluded with the suggestion of a further archaeological geophysical survey across the entire site in order to further reveal the archaeological resource of the study site.
