Abstract/Summary

This report covers the archaeological implications of the proposed development of 4.67 hectares of agricultural land located at the western end of Worgret Road. The archaeological resource across this site is partially known but not completely determined across the full extent of the site area. The site remains within an area of archaeological potential. The medieval town of Wareham developed along the main streets with gradual infilling of the areas behind, while outside the town walls 20th century development consisted of typical suburban estate road layouts along the line of Worgret Road. Added to this expansion was the construction of two schools, one adjacent to the site and Purbeck School to the south, which opened in 1974. The site has been the subject of archaeological site surveys in recent decades, albeit limited in that below ground investigation was focused upon the eastern portion of the site. A geophysical survey was proposed for the winter of 2010/2011 with results to be discussed with Dorset County Council as to whether further work need be completed.
