Description

Observations and recording after the site was levelled for construction of a footpath along the western side of the car park. A strip of land some 34m by 1.5m was affected. A layer of dark humic soil 0.3m to 0.8m thick was recorded, and modern features associated with Davis Row, 19th-century cottages demolished in the early 1930s, and subsequent use of the site for a Civil Defence Centre, later a Social Services centre, itself demolished in the 1980s when the car park was built. Two pieces of medieval pottery were recovered from unstratified levels.
