EDO6409 - Sherborne House, Newland, Sherborne; excavation, field evaluation, monitoring and recording 2011

A programme of archaeological works comprising field evaluation followed by full excavation in the northern part of the site, two evaluation trenches in a second, overgrown part of the site, and monitoring and recording of groundworks elsewhere. Work revealed that most of the site had been subject to modern disturbance and that any surviving features of possible medieval origin had been heavily truncated. Recorded medieval features included a road surface, a robbed-out wall, a further wall, two parallel ditches and three deposits overlying the natural clay. A substantial stone-built cellar structure was discovered, but there was no trace of a larger building to which it may have belonged. Nine pits yielding a few datable finds of the late 17th or early 18th century were recorded, two of which showed intense burning. There were also post-medieval and modern garden features.
