Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological works was carried out in connection with a planning application by Redcliffe Homes Ltd. Based on the results of previous field evaluations, full excavation took place in the northern end of the site together with monitoring and recording of the ground work elsewhere. The report concluded that much of the ground had been subject to modern disturbance and that the features with possible medieval origins had suffered considerable truncation. These were a road surface, a robbed wall, a further wall, two parallel ditches and three deposits overlying the natural clay. A substantial stone-built cellar structure was discovered however there was no trace of a larger building to which it may have belonged. Nine pits yielding a few datable finds of the late 17th or early 18th century were recorded, two of which showed intense burning. There were also post-medieval and modern garden features.
