Description

A largely desk-based assessment was carried out of the area for a proposed quarry extension on behalf of Imerys Minerals Ltd, as part of a planning application. The extension area comprised 21.1 ha and the broader study area an additional 500m increasing to 750m to include a scheduled monument. A walkover survey was also undertaken. There were no features of archaeological or historical significance within the extension area other than hedgerows shown on the tithe map of 1842 which were considered important. The main interest was the scheduled monument, a barrow, in the immediate vicinity although extensive evaluation of land around it had revealed no further evidence of archaeological interest.
