Summary
No. 20 is a three-storey red brick house with a three-bay façade and inserted modern shopfront. Together with No. 22, it forms a substantial purpose-built premises combining industrial and domestic accommodation. It was built by Samuel Gundry in 1764-5, who was using No. 22 as a warehouse for his business as a tallowchandler at the time.

Full Description
Nos. 20 and 22 South Street form a substantial purpose-built premises combining industrial and domestic accommodation in the form of two houses with ranges to the rear. The two houses have similar detailing but were built in two phases. No. 20 was built by Samuel Gundry in 1764-5, who was using No. 22 as a warehouse for his business as a tallowchandler at the time. There is a large three-storey wing to the rear of No. 20, which appears to have also been a warehouse. No. 20 appears to have been primarily domestic in function.
No. 20 is a three-storey red brick house with a three-bay façade with three ranges of sash windows on the first and second floors. The ground floor has an inserted modern shopfront. There is a modillion eaves cornice and pitched slate roof with coped gable ends. <1>
No 20 was built in 1764-5 by Samuel Gundry, tallowchandler, who was at that date using No 22 as his warehouse. No 22 had previously been the home of the Rev Thomas Collins, the Unitarian minister. Red brick. Pitched slate roofs. Coped gable ends. No 22 has contemporary brick stacks. 3 storeys and attics. Wooden console-shaped modillions to eaves. 3 ranges each of sashes with keystones and glazing bars (except for 2nd floor of No 22 which has casements). Central 1st floor window of No 22 is a slightly lower, segment headed casement with curious-shaped fascia board above. Modern shop fronts. 3-centred arch with keystone to central carriage entrance of former Tannery building behind. Spur stones under arch. Cobbled courtyard from arch extending to rear. <3>
