Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1984 prior to the redevelopment of the area of the former Greyhound Yard. (1) The results of the excavation were published together with the results of the adjacent Old Methodist Chapel excavations. (2) The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the published report (2).
This is the area between the edge of Enclosure 5518 to the west and Building 5449 to the east, behind the eastern frontage of the Greyhound Yard insula. This area is likely to be associated with Building 5449. No contemporary surfaces survive, but two pits [4407, 4440] were found in this area which may be contemporary with Building 5449.
Pit 4407 was roughly subrectangular in plan and 0.7m deep. It was filled with clay loam soils, the lower two layers [4411, 4410] of which contained a relatively high proportion of pottery and bone, suggesting that it was used for rubbish disposal. The pottery included Corfe Mullen ware and Samian, suggesting a date of AD75-100 for the filling of this pit.
Pit [4440]lay to the south and was a shallow rounded pit that contained the partial skeleton of a sheep.
