Monument record MDO18142 - Greyhound Yard, Roman building 5502

In the central area of the insula investigated by the excavations at Greyhound Yard in 1984 were the remains of a timber beam slot building 5502 and a series of slots, postholes, a pit and chalk surfaces in the immediately surrounding area.

Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1984 prior to the redevelopment of the area of the former Greyhound Yard. (1) The results of the excavation were published together with the results of the adjacent Old Methodist Chapel excavations. (2) The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the published report (2). Building 5502 comprised two square-cut slots [3852, 3854] about 0.5m deep, which formed the north and east walls. The south wall was not defined and the west wall was outside of the excavation area. Another slot [3619] 0.7m deep may have formed an internal wall line. No contemporary floor surfaces were found. Its precise function is not known. This building was primary in the sequence in this area, cutting through only the pre-urban soils. This building is poorly dated but is sealed by chalk surfaces dated to the 1st century AD.
