Full Description

Found during the 1987 evaluation in Trench FR14 at Middle Farm undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in advance of the construction of the Dorchester By-pass(1) (2) (3). The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the report and archive (1) (3). A 2.5m long arc of three postholes was exposed. The postholes were about 0.65m diameter and 0.4m deep. Twenty-five sherds of Beaker pottery, probably from no more than five vessels, were recovered from the postholes. The stratigraphic relationship between this structure and the deep colluvial sequence in this area could not be determined as they were exposed in the base of the machine-cut trench. It is unclear what the nature of this structure was originally, but may have been a small windbreak or shelter. No contemporary surfaces were found.
