Summary

An unurned cremation in a small grave was found close to a Middle Bronze Age field boundary intersection during the 2005 excavation by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development. The grave contained the cremated remains of an adult/subadult about 15-25 years old and a juvenile c. 5-12 years old, together with some pyre debris in the form of wood charcoal. This cremation was undated, but its location in the corner of a Middle Bronze Age field suggests it may be of MBA date. This cremation cut another similar cremation grave.

Full Description

A cremation was found close to a Middle Bronze Age field boundary intersection during the 2005 excavation by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report (1). A small grave containing the remains of an unurned cremation burial of an adult/subadult about 15-25 years old and a juvenile c. 5-12 years old, together with some pyre debris in the form of wood charcoal was found just north of the intersection of two Middle Bronze Age field boundaries. This cremation was undated, but its location in the corner of a Middle Bronze Age field suggests it may be of MBA date. This cremation cut a similar cremation grave [39].
