Summary

An earth covered building surrounded by an earthwork bank is visible on 1940's aerial photographs of Burning Cliff, Ringstead. It is considered likely to be the site of one of the operational buildings associated with the chain home radar station that was active here between 1940 and 1956.

RADAR STATION. SRF, with 3 photographs Possible letter with location plan links to this site RAF Ringstead Burning Cliff Upton Chain Home and Chain Home Low Recorder- G. Matthews. <1-3> An earth covered building surrounded by an earthwork bank is visible on 1940's aerial photographs of Burning Cliff, Ringstead <4-5>. It is considered likely to be the site of one of the operational buildings associated with the chain home radar station that was active here between 1940 and 1956. It forms part of a group of dispersed structures relating to the radar station, including reciever masts (MDO24568, MDO29289, MDO29293), transmission and reciever blocks, accomodation huts, guard huts and standby set houses. This structure is still visible as an overgrown earthwork mound on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project <6>. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
