Full Description

(SY69728989) Aucissa brooch and R B sherds. <1> A Romano-Celtic brooch of Aucissa type and RB sherds were found in September 1939 during the digging of air raid trenches at Dorchester Grammar School, on the S side of the path to Max Gate and c. 35 yards NE of the N wing of the school buildings [SY69728989]. As a type it belongs to the early 1st century AD but it may have continued to be made throughout the 1st century. On loan to the Dorset County Museum Acc. No. 1945.7.1.The area is covered with filled in and partly filled in air raid trenches. <2> 'It is understood that the brooch was found in dark earth with a few sherds of RB pottery, but no structural features were noticed. The characteristic humped brooch inscribed with the makers name Aucissa belongs a s a type to the 1st century AD, but its uninscribed derivatives, of which the present example is one, may have continued to be made in the latter part of the 1st century.' The area is covered with filled in and partly filled in air raid trenches. There were no surface finds. The brooch was seen in Dorset County Museum. <3>
