Full Description

Three walls and a pit of post-medieval date were recorded in a watching brief at 56-58 West Street, Bridport, undertaken by AC archaeology in 2003-4 (1). A short length of a single course of mortared limestone block wall footings was exposed along the eastern boundary of the site just behind the buildings on the West Street frontage. This probably is the remains of a recently demolished building. To the rear of the plot, the NE corner of a structure with mortared limestone rubble and brick walls was exposed. The walls survived up to a height of 1.4m. These walls are probably the remains of a building fronting onto the northern side of Rope Walks, depicted on the 1773 Hutchins’ map of Bridport. A large apparently 19th century rubbish pit was also uncovered in the southern end of the site, but its details and location are not recorded. (1)
