Full Description
AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation at Foster’s School, Hound Street during 1993, in advanced of proposed re-development. Threee 1.5m wide trenches were excavated totalling 34m in length.
A number of medieval features were recorded, including several medieval pits. Pit [21] in Trench 1 cut through a medieval midden or demolition layer. It was filled with a silty clay loam containing limestone fragments, much charcoal and medieval pottery. Two sub-rectangular features [15] & [16] and segments of two further pits [17] & [19] in Trench 3 are also likely to be medieval in date.
The pits appear to be associated with the fragmentary remains of a possible medieval structure. Medieval pottery recovered from a range of features suggests late 12th-14th century activity on the site. [1]
