Summary
Evidence of 19th century ironstone mining, consisting of pits and spoil heaps, is visible as earthworks on undated aerial photographs (possibly 1960s), to the south of an inland harbour (see linked record) constructed by J E Holloway in about 1850 to bring barges in close to the shore at Hengistbury Head.

Full Description
Evidence of 19th century ironstone mining, consisting of pits and spoil heaps, is visible as earthworks on undated aerial photographs (possibly 1960s), to the south of an inland harbour (see linked record) constructed to bring barges in close to the mining area at Hengistbury Head. The earthworks are visible over an area measuring approximately 1280 m by 330 m and comprise two large pits, with spoil heaps to the north of them. (1-2) The earthworks are not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (3) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
