Full Description

J. E . Holloway cut a canal from Christchurch Harbour straight into the artifical basin now known as Holloway's Dock in about 1850. This was to allow barges to be brought into the dock to be loaded with ironstone doggers quarried from the Head. It was in use until 1870. (1-3) The canal leading from Christchurch Harbour to the artificial inland harbour is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1969. Evidence of ironstone mining is visible to the south of the inland harbour (see linked record). The canal is aligned north-south and measures approximately 240 m in length and up to 20 m in width. Narrow banks can be seen on either side of the canal. The artificial basin, or Holloway's Dock, measures 230 m by 82 m. (4) The basin and canal still survive as earthworks on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (5) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
