Full Description

An area of possibly late post medieval to modern quarrying is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s immediately to the south east of California Farm (formerly Herston Farm), Swanage. The earthworks consist of: quarry pits, scarps, spoil heaps and at least three shafts (see linked records 6 020 150-2) in the south and centre of the area. A fourth shaft is marked on the 1st edition OS map in the north western part of the area, but could not be definitely identified on the aerial photographs (see 6 020 149). The quarries are located on limestone, visible as pits over an area measuring approximately 200 m by 215 m. (1) This site was digitally plotted during the South west Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
