Monument record MDO44882 - Possible Second World War light anti aircraft battery, Blandford Camp, Tarrant Monkton

A group of structures and earthworks on the south side of Blandford Camp are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered likely to be part of a Second World War light anti aircraft battery and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

A group of structures and earthworks on the south side of Blandford Camp are visible on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features visible on an aerial photograph dated 1947 suggests four rectilinear plots protected by earth banks and/or sandbags. These features may be gun emplacements for light anti aircraft guns, such as Bofors guns, for example. A 11m in diameter circular earthwork to the northeast of the four gun pits may be a searchlight emplacement. Together the features may form all or part of a light anti aircraft battery. The features are visible but very indistinct on a 1944 aerial photograph [2] but were digitally plotted using the 1947 source during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
