Monument record MDO46167 - Well, Colliton House, Colliton Park, Dorchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A circular well discovered unexpectedly during groundworks for a new patio in 2006 was recorded by Terrain Archaeology. The well was around 1m in diameter and cut into natural chalk with chalk block steyning at the top. The well had been modified to accept a chute that acted as a drain from the eighteenth-century part of Colliton House; both the well and chute had later been capped by a brick vault. The well could not be dated. It may have been associated with the 16-17th century phase of Colliton House or have related to the medieval Hospital of St John the Baptist. The conversion of the well is likely to be early 18th century in date.
