Summary

A round mound (26m across) is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1945 within Matcham's Park. It is considered to be a Bronze Age round barrow as was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

Bowl barrows. (B). Diam 13 paces Height 3ft. Slight ditch. <2> These barrows are situated on the summit of two natural knolls in a recently afforested area. In consequence accurate measurement of `A' was not possible. `B' has a present diameter of 10.5m and average height of 0.8m. No ditches are now visible. <3> As described by authority 3. Average height of `A' 1.0m. Published survey `A' (SU 251908) revised. Published survey `B' correct. <4> No change; Published 1/2500 correct. <5> SU 126020. Round barrows NW of Matcham's House. Scheduled. An undamaged barrow of similar dimensions to `B'. Barrow `B' 5ft high, 20-25 yds diameter. Slightly damaged by a sandpit on circumference. `C' a possible third barrow 200yds WSW of `A' (SU 12510195). The whole area is undulating and is covered by bracken, and may well contain other barrows. (Theses three barrows were originally scheduled number Hampshire 234 but are now number Dorset 855). <6> A round mound (26m across) is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1945 within Matcham's Park <7>. It is considered to be a Bronze Age round barrow as was digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP. The site is under scrubby vegetation and light tree cover, it is still extant as an earthwork although its condition could not be accessed <8>.
