Full Description

A lime kiln recorded as ‘limekiln’ on the second edition (1900-2) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who recorded that very little (1-19%) of the structure survived in poor condition. It was not possible to determine what type of kiln construction this was. (1) A post medieval lime kiln is visible as a structure on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the east of Chaldon Herring, adjacent to a chalk pit. The structure measures approximately 12 m by 6 m. (2) The lime kiln is marked on the 1st ed OS map. (3) The chalk pit which is probably associated with the lime kiln is recorded separately (see MDO32165). This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
