Full Description

A covered ropewalk along the north side of the shipbuilding yard at Bridport Harbour is first marked on James Green's 1823 map of the harbour with a store marked somewhere near the centre of the walk (1). The ropewalk is also shown on the 1845 Symondsbury Tithe Map (2). By 1890 the ropewalk has been reduced in length by over half with only the west end still extant (3). By 1902 the ropewalk has completely disappeared (4). This ropewalk was undoubtedly associated with the shipbuilding yard immediately to the south, which was in operation between the second half of the 18th century and closed down some time between 1979 and 1885 (5)
