Full Description

Four pits and other features of post-medieval date were exposed during the evaluation of a site to the rear of the Volunteer Inn, South Street, Bridport, undertaken by AC archaeology in 2001. Four pits were found in Trenches 2 and 3 and none of them were fully exposed or excavated. They contained some finds of 18th or 19th century date and are probably rubbish pits. A single residual medieval sherd was recovered from one of the pits. The edge of a stone-lined pit or soakaway was also revealed and was clearly later post-medieval or early modern in date. Two narrow drainage channels were also found in Trench 1. These are undated but are stratigraphically fairly recent in date.(1)
