Full Description

A two stage archaeological evaluation carried out in April and June-July 2002 on behalf of Purbeck District Council. Archaeological remains from the medieval and post-medieval periods exist in the study area. The present library courtyard revealed only post-medieval deposits, while the library car park revealed both medieval and post-medieval deposits. In test pits 1 and 2 deposits of dumped material were overlying the natural gravel. In test pit 1 these deposits were overlain by sand and mortar and then garden soil. In test pit 2 no surface was evident, but a similar deposit of garden soil sealed the dumped material. In test pit 3 a feature was observed cutting through the natural, pottery found within it demonstrated this ditch was filled in the 14th century. Test pit 4 revealed a 20th century structure overlain by dark soil.
