Full Description

A brick yard at Springbourne, now partially beneath Knyveton Gardens is marked on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch epoch 1 map (1871). The brick yard is roughly rectangular shape with the railway line to Bournemouth East Station, built in 1870 forming the boundary to the north and a clay pit to the south. The map seems to indicate that the railway is built over the northern part of the brick yard. There is another brick yard immediately on the other side of the railway line and it is possible that they were both part of the same brickworks prior to the construction of the railway. There is a long rectangular kiln in the northern part of the brick yard. (1) The brickworks became disused by the later nineteenth century as they are no longer shown on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map epoch 2. Part of the former brickworks lies beneath Knyveton Gardens and part beneath housing. (2)
