Abstract/Summary
'Archaeological monitoring was conducted at West Walks and adjavent to Bowling Alley Walk, on the Roman town defences of Dorchester (Scheduled Monument No. DO648), during the replacement of steps, a footpath and a fence. The monitoring took place during February 2010 in accordance with a grant of Scheduled Monument Consent. The monitoring consisted of continuous observation during all stages of the groundworks. The minimal nature of the disturbance to the subsoil limited the opportunity to make observations on the nature of the monument. Of fifty-eight post holes dug by hand, thirty-four penetrated approximately 100mm into a compact chalk and loam level which may represent the top of the Roman bank. No artefacts or archaeological features were recorded.'
