Abstract/Summary
Three evaluation trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were found in all three trenches, sealed below a 1.2m thick layer of soil build-up. The most significant feature was a large ditch with fairly large quantities of Late Iron Age/ Early Roman pottery in its upper levels. It is suggested that this feature may be part of the defences of a Late Iron Age port and emporium. Geophysical survey has traced this feature for a total distance of 55m.
The other trenches revealed some small boundary or drainage ditches, again probably late Iron Age/Early Roman in date.
