Abstract/Summary
Three test pits were excavated adjacent to the chancel of the parish church of St. Thomas a Becket, Pulham, Dorset, during July 1997, to investigate subsidence of the south and east chancel walls. Substantial archaeological deposits were encountered and recorded, including several phases of masonry structural remains and two human burials (one Christian, one possibly pre-Christian). No direct dating evidence was recovered for either the structural remains or the burials, although medieval pottery was associated with deposits sealing one of the walls and the Christian burial. An analysis of the building sequence raises the possibility that the earliest phase of wall foundations exposed may be of saxon date.
