Abstract/Summary
AC Archaeology undertook the archaeological evaluation of a proposed borehole site at West Stafford, Dorchester, Dorset (OS NGR SY719891). The evaluation, carried out by means of machine-excavated trenches, demonstrated evidence for later prehistoric activity on the slopes above the valley of the South Winterbourne. The evidence consists of a light scatter of artefacts recovered during machine stripping and of a number of subsoil features, the majority interpreted within the confines of the evaluation trenches as being ditches. These vary considerably in dimension and form and may consequently have performed a variety of functions the most obvious of which is as field boundaries.
