Abstract/Summary
‘Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Savills Chartered Surveyors on behalf of Mr H J C Ross Skinner of Warmwell House, to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site of a proposed Manège within the site of an old walled garden in the village of Warmwell, Dorset (NGR SY 75268595).
The purpose of the study was to collate and document the known archaeological resources within the proposed development area, and within a study area of 0.5 km around it.
The site is located within an old walled garden which is now covered in rough pasture with no visible archaeological feature visible at ground level. An earthwork which borders the northern edge of the site is believed to be a post-medieval trackway. There is no recorded evidence of archaeological activity within the development area, although earthworks, which may be the remains of a medieval shrunken settlement, exist to the north-east. The village is also situated in a landscape rich in prehistoric and Roman sites, many of which have only been uncovered in the last five years.
The potential therefore for previously unknown archaeological deposits to exist below the development area is high.
The proposed development has the potential to have a limited impact on any such deposits.’
