Abstract/Summary

'An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in November 2010, on the proposed site of a new visitor centre at the barn on Hengistbury Head, Southbourne, Bournemouth, Dorset (OS NGR SZ16629107). Four trial trenches were mechanically excavated; two on the southern edge of a metalled yard west of the barn and two within the existing garden immediately south and south west of the Rangers' cottage. A limestone slab-capped brick-lined feature (probably originally a well) was discovered within the yard area. The brick used in the well lining suggests it may be broadly contemporary with construction of the barn in the 1860s, although it had subsequently been modified to serve as a drainage soakaway. No other archaeological features or finds were recovered.'
