Please read our .

Summary

Three sections of probable boundary ditches were revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp. One ditch was part of an Iron Age enclosure, excavated by Christopher Sparey Green. The other two ditches had V-shaped profiles and were aligned roughly N-S and E-W. They contained scraps of Late Iron Age pottery, but are otherwise undated. They are probably part of the Roman enclosure system which lies across this area.

Full Description

Three sections of probable boundary ditches were revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp (1) (2) (3) (4). One ditch could be identified as part of the same ditch as Ditch E816, part of an Iron Age enclosure, excavated by Christopher Sparey Green (5). A V-shaped ditch aligned roughly N-S was found further to the west. This was 1m deep and 1.9m wide with a single stakehole on either side at the top, perhaps indicating a double line of protective fencing. Further to the south was a V-shaped ditch 1.5m wide and 1.5m deep, aligned roughly E-W. These ditches contained scraps of Late Iron Age pottery, but are otherwise undated. They are probably part of the Roman enclosure system which lies across this area (5).
