Abstract/Summary
The line of the Wessex Water pipeline from the Wessex Water tower on Bridport Road through Poundbury and out past Burton was observed. A small excavation was carried out by W G Putnam where the line of the pipeline crosses the supposed course of the Roman aqueduct, but no trace was found. No trace of the Roman road from Dorchester to Ilchester was observed either. Two trenches excavated north of Poundbury Road and south of the railway line revealed only modern deposits. Five Roman burials were found in the car park of Integrated Photomatrix Ltd in Poundbury Industrial Estate including one in a lead-lined stone coffin. To the north three further trenches were excavated and three more Roman graves were found, together with some prehistoric pits, ditches and gullies.
