Summary
Grave 196 was one of a number of Roman graves revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp in 1986. The chalk-cut grave was aligned SE-NW and contained a prone adult inhumation aged 30-35 years, with the hands under the pelvis. No coffin nails were present. Grave goods comprised a small ferrous object, possibly a shroud pin, below the fourth vertebra. This burial was one of the outlying burials to the main Late Roman cemetery at Poundbury.

Grave 196 was one of a number of Roman graves revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp in 1986 (1) (2) (3) (4)). The chalk-cut grave was aligned SE-NW and contained a prone adult inhumation aged 30-35 years, with the hands under the pelvis. No coffin nails were present. Grave goods comprised a small ferrous object, possibly a shroud pin, below the fourth vertebra.
This burial was one of the outlying burials to the main Late Roman cemetery at Poundbury (5).
