SDO9537 - 'The Poundbury pipe-line: Archaeological Observations and Excavations', Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society

A water pipeline was inserted along the northern edge and across the western part of the Poundbury Industrial Estate and continued along the eastern margins of Poundbury Camp, crossing Poundbury Road and up to the Wessex Water depot on Bridport Road. The pipeline crossed the projected line of both a Roman road and the Roman aqueduct, but no trace of either was revealed. Several ditches and some postholes, probably from an Iron Age roundhouse were found in the NW corner of Poundbury Industrial Estate. One Late Iron Age Durotrigian burial and 11 Late Roman burials were encountered. One burial was in a lead coffin within a stone sarcophagus.
